Laser Hair Removal and Me

My name is Namrita and I have been working here at Advanced Laser Skin clinics for 3 years.  I have always been into skincare and this seemed like a natural path for me to follow.
I grew up making my own face masks and  giving  anyone who I could lay my hands on, a facial! At one point , I had started making full body masks that I applied on myself every night. Cleanup was a nightmare. I used to use Tumeric in the mask - if any of you have used it before, you know it is a real pain to get rid of the bright yellow it leaves behind!
Anyhow, I came to America and enrolled in beauty school - Hair something in San Jacinto outside of Houston Tx. I ended up studying business instead because I thought job opportunities that came with a business major would do better for me in India as opposed to a cosmetology degree...
I ended up meeting my husband and not going back to India, and I worked in Corporate America for 8 years. I think it was great experience. But I thought it was time to do what I really wanted. I quit in 2003 and have been doing this ever since. I am much happier.
I have spent a lot of time studying skin care and laser and practicing it. I actually tried electrolysis and the Q switched YAG on myself before the diode.
Electrolysis is a process where you pass an electrical current using a needle into each hair follicle to try and disable it. In my opinion, electrolysis is very dependent on the technician. I had a great Tech in Houston, but then never found anyone as good here in Chicago. Besides laser was out by then.
My first experience with laser was with a Q-Switched Yag. Has anyone out there had this? They put carbon on my face and zapped the hair. It was quite an experience. Then I did the Light Sheer . I have had great results with it. I did it about 4 years ago.

In Illinois, you have to be an aesthetician / RN working under the supervision of an MD to use lasers. The companies that make the lasers certify you. There is no school here that offers a comprehensive program on lasers yet. Peels and Microderms should have been covered in your school.
Look for a job in a Medi Spa ( newspapers / internet ). When you interview, ask if your reponsibilities will include using laser and if the clinic will get you certified. Another option is to attend seminars / workshops that laser manufacterers have ( eg Lumenis is holding one in October ). You will be able to network there as many clinic managers are at these type of events.

I have a question for Namrita. How many treatments did you require for this procedure? And where?

        Neetu,

I am Indian, so my skin type is IV-V. I had about 8 treatments on my face. I have done my arms, legs underarms and bikini now also - all needed about 8 /9 treatments.

          Hey Namrita,
I am south asian as well . .. .quite possibly skin type 4 maybe 5. I had my consultation with Advanced Laser Clinics in Lincoln Park. So far, I like the customer service and the confidence displayed by the technician. I would like to have most of my face treated. I have dark hair on my sides, chin, and neck and light (and long), hair on my cheeks and upper lip. I really want to get this done but I am deeply concerned about the complications that may result from this procedure .. . you can never be too careful with lasers. So here are my questions:
          1. Did you experience complications after your treatments .. . such as burning, hypo/hyperpigmentation, etc. So far the Lincoln Park location has assured me that they haven't personally witnessed any major complications.
          2. How bad was it? And how did Advanced Laser Clinics handle it? How is their patient support system?
          3. What do you think of the lightsheer diode? Was it painful? Was it effective?
          4. You say that you had your first lightsheer diode experience about four years ago ... was it on your face?
          5. How were your results? After your final treatment, roughly, what percentage of your hair returned . . .6mths later, 1yr later, 4yrs later?
          6. Have you recommended this procedure to any of your south asian friends? If so, have they been pleased with their results? Again, were their any complications?

I am just worried because this is my FACE and I just want to make sure that it does not get any worse, especially since I am a darker skin type. And then I am worried that this procedure may not be as effective as they say. Sadly, I have no one to ask these questions .. . .other than the company itself (I have gone to several different companies and have narrowed it down to Advanced Laser clinics and a dermatologist who specializes in lasers). The reason I like the company better is because it's slightly more affordable and their experience level with the laser and my skin type seems to be reasonable. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated as I would like to get this procedure done ASAP ... hopefully by this Wednesday.

          Thank you sooo much!

      Namrita,
I just wanted to thank you for being sooo patient and answering all of my questions regarding laser hair removal as much as you possibly could. I appreciate that. I haven't found a tech who has been able to do that yet.

Way to go for following your dreams! Sometimes doing what we want to do goes at the sacrifice of money, but what is money when we are happy? It's great that you got specialized training in laser tools for cosmetology. I have always wondered if they were safe. What is your take on the safety of laser cosmetology? Should I go without worries?

I am interested in advanced procedures such as laser hair removal but I would first ask that could it be done to the patient of Seborrheic Dermatitis. A patient of Seborrheic Dermatitis may have less hair , could it be cured through laser?
